If you thought the era of colorful Starbucks drinks was over, you’d be wrong. In fact, the coffee chain has evolved its famed rainbow beverages to brighten up your caffeine fix in a whole new way, and the result is nothing short of mesmerizing.
Starting February 20, Starbucks stores in Asia will offer the Butterfly Pea Lemonade Cold Brew, a layered, color-changing cold brew that you just have to see to believe. Basically, the drink is a half-and-half with lemonade and iced coffee instead of iced tea, and it comes in a purple-to-yellow-to-coffee ombre that’s pretty enough on its own. The real magic, however, happens when you stir it. The butterfly pea flower tea, a “trending ingredient in Southeast Asia,” according to Starbucks, changes colors when it comes into contact with the lemonade, creating stunning swirls of color.
Diehard Instagrammers in the United States created their own version of a Unicorn Lemonade last year, but the layered raspberry lemonade concoction doesn’t hold up to this truly revolutionary half-coffee-half-lemonade menu item. Other new offerings in Asian countries include Macadamia Cocoa Cappuccino, a cappuccino with rich macadamia chocolate sauce, topped with a swirl of nutty chocolate sauce and a crumble of macadamia nuts and graham crackers, and a Tahitian Vanilla Macchiato, which has been tested before and will make its return.
